Eyes of the Beholder

Koutetsu stared at herself in the mirror in disbelief. For the most part, everything looked the same. She had long silver hair, slightly messy. Pointed teeth, and she even had the same eye ridges as her brother; although hers were less pronounced. But what called her attention in the mirror was her eyes. All her life, she had one grey eye and one red eye. This was normal for people before they met their soul mate. She had always just assumed that the grey color was hers while the red was her soul mate's simply because grey was the only color that was consistent among her family members. But now they were both grey. That meant she had met her soul mate. But who was it? She didn't even realize when it happened. Her own brother hadn't even noticed! She had to hear it from Kendo! She didn't look in the mirror very often, even when brushing her hair. Though, she usually did while brushing her teeth. How had she never noticed this?!

And that was how Koutetsu found herself in the women's bathroom, bending over a sink to stare at her eyes. Dammit, what was she supposed to do? She didn't need everyone else to know that she met her soul mate, especially since she didn't know who they were. Luckily, she knew Kendo wasn't about to tell anyone. The girl wasn't a gossip. She sighed, and used her fingers to brush some hair over her normally red eye. Hopefully no one noticed and/or questioned the change in hairstyle. Ok... time to get back to class. She leaned back off the sink, and left the bathroom. Her brother smiled and waved when she came back to class. It was in between classes, so she didn't have to worry about disrupting anything. She smiled back, and sat in her usual spot.

"You alright? You were gone for a while." Tetsutetsu said, jumping into big brother mode. Koutetsu was a year younger than him, but she had worked hard to move up a grade so she could be in the same class as him. She just laughed it off, waving her hand dismissively.

"Yeah, yeah. Just ate something that disagreed with me." It was a blatant lie, but she was pretty good at lying. She shouldn't be proud of that, and she really wasn't, but it came in handy here. And he didn't seem to have noticed her hair. The rest of the day was relatively easy once she put the thought of her soul mate from her mind.

Eijiro had pretty much fallen over when he realized that his eyes had changed. Every time he’d looked in the mirror. One grey, one red. When he was 4; one grey, one red. Meeting his friends in middle school; one grey, one red. When he’d studied his ass off and actually gotten into U.A.; one grey, one red. When he brushed his teeth this morning; one grey, one red. But now, after the Sports Festival had come and gone, he had two red eyes staring back at him when he looked in the mirror!

He placed one hand on either side of the mirror, leaning in close as if it was some kind of trick of the light. When that didn’t prove to turn the newly-red eye back to grey, he stumbled back in the bathroom and pressed his back to the wall. Katsuki looked at him and quirked an eyebrow, the blond washing his hands at the sink. “The fuck’s up with you, Kirishima? Scare yourself in the mirror?”

“Bakugou, I-” Eijiro started, pausing for a moment to really think about what he was going to say before, “Bro, my eyes’re different!”

“Fuck off.”

“No, really, they are! Look!” He leaned into the blond, pointing at his previously-grey-now-red-in-case-you-missed-that-important-fact. “They’re both red now!”

Katsuki paused for a second before scoffing, looking back at this hands. “Means you met your soulmate, idiot.”

“Awww man! This is gonna suck! Do you know how many people have grey eyes?”

“A shit ton.”

“Exactly! What am I supposed to do?! Just walk up to everyone I remember having at least one grey eye and seeing if it’s different?!”

“‘S about all you can do, Shitty Hair.” Katsuki turned to him. “Now are you gonna move out of the way of the paper towels or am I gonna have to kick you out of the way?”

Eijiro quickly sidestepped, forming a mental list of everyone he knew that had at least one grey eye before shouting a good bye and rushing out of the bathroom. Hey, he was a man on a mission. He’d met his soulmate by pure, random chance and didn’t even know who it was. He had to find them!!!

It took him a while, tracking down everyone and checking their eyes. Todoroki just plain had heterochromia and had already met his soulmate, and Yaoyorozu’s grey eye was a shade too dark- that and she still had a soft brown eye. After that, he moved onto strangers and barely acquaintances before remembering someone: Tetsutetsu! That guy had a grey eye! At least, Eijiro was pretty sure he did.

Unfortunately, Tetsutetsu still had his mismatched eyes and no idea who it could be. There wasn’t anyone that he knew of that had changed eye colors, but he did mention something. His younger sister, Koutetsu, had suddenly changed up her hairstyle. That wasn’t too out of the ordinary, except for the fact that she had taken to covering one of her eyes. That wasn’t smart for hero work and studies, and the older brother was worried that it’d affect her depth perception and how well she could see in just her day to day tasks!

That was enough for Eijiro to switch gears and try to track down Koutetsu. The problem was, he couldn’t seem to catch her. At every turn, she was always one step ahead. Tried to catch her in the halls, she wasn’t there. Cafeteria, not there. Library, not there. In the design studio, chatting to the support kids, nope. He slid open the door to Class 1-B, Monoma getting out a “Well, look-” before Kirishima all but threw him out of the way. And Koutetsu still wasn’t there!

Then, while wandering the halls one day, he spotted her! She was actually there. “Tetsutetsu!” he called out to her, hurrying after the girl. “Wait up! Tetsutetsu!” He managed to catch up to her, reaching out to grab onto her shoulder. “Tetsutetsu, we need to talk! Your eye changed right?? Mine did too! I think we’re soulmates!”
