Life wasn’t always easy in the Antarctic, in fact it was rarely easy, which lead Izuku to wonder why he never tried to use his human form to live amongst the humans like some of his counterparts had done. What could he say? He really just enjoyed the freedom of it all. The wind against his whiskered cheeks, the exercise of hunting, the sounds of the ice caps. Even the thrill of being chased and possibly eaten by a hungry Killer Whale was enjoyable to the seal.
Kind of like right now.
To avoid a rather persistent Killer Whale that had been pursuing Izuku feverishly, he ducked into a crevice in the ice that he knew was too small for the whale to follow. As he swam beneath the ice looking for an exit back into open water where he hoped that particular Killer Whale had given up, his eyes caught on a delicious looking fish floating about. He had been swimming for quite some time with no food and his little tummy began to rumble. Izuku squinted his eyes, twitched his nose, and pounced. He grew up a bit different from his brethren in that Izuku hunted in his between form—partially human, partially seal—as he found he had more agility that way; and to be honest the greenette just preferred to be in this form. With the freshly caught fish in his mouth he noticed that above them was a break in the ice. Perfect. A place for the Leopard Seal to survey the area as he ate. He dashed upwards, the beautiful bright sun growing larger as he approached the surface.
With a nice splash Izuku’s head emerged from the hole in the ice and he plopped the fish down in front of him on the ice so that he could climb out. He climbed out gracefully, sitting comfortably on the ice but once his eyes fully adjusted to the surface world he noticed the mistake he had made. There was a human. Right here. In front of him. Staring at him with disbelief in his garnet eyes. Crap. Completely forgetting his snack, Izuku squeaked loudly, shifting to full seal form as he spun on his belly quickly in hopes that he could splash back into the water before the human realized what was going on or worse.. caught him.
Hybrids weren’t well known, or at least not here in Antartica, therefore Izuku was taught from a young age that he needed to hide his identity. Only approach humans if he was in full-human shift, and not to do that so often either. Izuku heard horror stories of the poaching humans did to all animals not just seals, for their coats, teeth, and meat. His mother was very strict, ‘Do not trust the humans, Izuku. They bring nothing but trouble and their hearts are black as night.’ With that fear instilled in him since childhood the poor seals heart beat uncontrollably as he hoped he could make it back to the hole in the ice safe and sound.
