The idea of the red string of fate was something Katsuki didn't like knowing. He remembers having it since at least around 3, that was his earliest memory. He remembered seeing the faint string from the corner of his eye, would try to chase it, but it would disappear before he could get far. As he grew up, he tried to ignore it. 'It's nothing, he'd think. 'It doesn't exist.' Even if he was told by his parents about their story of meeting, or other adults, or even the occasional teen that managed to find their soulmate, but he always turned his head away and pushed the thought away. He didn't understand how everyone could have a soulmate, even the worst people, those who committed crimes. What about the people who's soulmates died before they were found? Would they just get a new soul mate, or would they go forever without one? Seemed lonely as hell, and Katsuki didn't think he liked the idea of being fated to one person their entire life.
Some nights, he would lay in bed, bring his hand up and watch the glitter of the string as the moonlight streamed onto it, the string was hard to see most days. Faint, occasionally he would feel a slight tug, but a tug back with his own hand had it stop and disappear again. Sometimes he could see it clearly, on sunny days in the city, he could see the thin fabric that made it up. When it showed up, he sometimes felt a slight pull in his chest to follow it, but.. He was scared, not that he would ever admit it. Who could be on the other side? What if it was someone he couldn't ever think of getting along with? What if they didn't like the fact he wore hearing aids? Would they say there was a mistake?
It was easy to turn away after those thoughts entered his mind.
Middle school was focused on getting good grades to go into the best high school in the city, wanting to be able to get into a good career for himself, already having ideas to become an engineer sometime in the future. He didn't let the string cross his mind, ignored anyone that tried to bring it up or spoke about their own strings enthusiastically. He'd already decided he didn't have a soul mate, that there was a mistake with the universe and that he wouldn't ever let someone get close enough to him.
But then the first day of high school came along.
"Dude.. look at your string."
"Hah?"
"Yoooouuuuur striiiiing."
"I have my fucking hearing aids in, asshole." Katsuki snapped, moving his leg to kick the other blond student, who complains about the pain. As the other whined, Katsuki looked down at his right pinky, and he doesn't think he's seen the string this visible, especially to other people. His mouth goes dry, brows furrowing. What the hell? Wait... were they in the school? It tugs, pulling taut across the room and to the doorway, and there's pulling. Strong pulling. "What the fu--" He's pulled from his seat and curses, getting up and yanking back. It goes loose for a second before he's being tugged again, and he growls in frustration, deciding he's going to kick the idiot's ass, whoever was tugging on the damn string.
It's making him move fast, nearly making him trip and stumble a few times. Then he's out the front doors, and he looks ahead to see the... redheaded girl. Oh... hey she's actually kinda cu--
"Oi!" It's too late. Before he realizes, she's yanking him right to her and making him crash into her, toppling them over. He grunts, before lifting himself up, glaring down at her. "What the hell is wrong with you?" He snapped, moving off of her and standing.
