Celestial Bodies [Moon x Sun]

Today was the day! Today he had been working like a slave from the moment he'd been accepted into the internship, going to school and working long hours at the Pizzaplex at the same time till he'd graduated and could focus on his job. Even then he did all the jobs the other engineers didn't want till little by little he was given more freedom. In time, he was allowed tiny projects of his own and when those worked out well, he was allowed larger ones. And today was finally it. The first "large" project he was being trusted to undertake.

The higher-ups had spent a considerable amount of money to set up a daycare and had, for the first time, created an animatronic from one of their candy lines to tend to it. At first, it had been a hit, but like many things within Fazbear Entertainment, corners had been cut. The Daycare Attendant had been given a clever design in that it switched from the characters Sun and Moon depending on lighting conditions. It was supposed to be whimsical and while that goal was achieved, the rest of the design... Well... That's where the problem came in. Some of the children did fine with the design, but others found it frightening. What's worse, whoever thought giving Moon red eyes because he had 'infrared vision' should have been fired. Now, he was going to correct all the 'shortcuts' that had been taken and make this attraction really work!

Zeke Hennie had been working hard every second of extra time he had on top of what he was allowed normally to work on redesigns for the ever neglected Sun and Moon. Now he just needed to go get them! He just hoped his new designs wouldn't be taken poorly... He left Parts and Service once all the prep was done and made his way through the service tunnels then slipped his way into the Daycare through the small, out-of-the-way employee door. He was instantly enveloped by the ever bouncy tune within. "Sun?! Today's the day, buddy! Sorry it's taken so long, but I wanted to make sure everything was perfect for you guys!"

"Oh no... Is it that day already? I don't want to go. Surely there's a better way to get our numbers up than this..." Came the quiet grumble within Sun's mind, the Moon's anxiety filtering its way to his counterpart's mind. It would be such a big change... What if it didn't work? What if their numbers fell and they were decommissioned? There was such a huge risk for them! Sure, Zeke had been nothing but kind to them the whole time they'd known him, but what if he was wrong?

Sun had been organizing art supplies when he heard Zeke call. He began fidgeting with the bells on his wrist, something he always did when his hands weren't already preoccupied with something else, as he excitedly made his way over. He could feel Moon's anxiety and reluctance before his counterpart even spoke. "Aw come on moony, everything's gonna be fine! You worry too much. Zeke is so friendly and I'm sure he knows exactly what he's doing. Just think of all the fun we'll have after this!" Sun said trying to cheer up Moon or at least make him feel a little bit better about going. As Sun walked closer to Zeke he waved excitedly, practically vibrating with excitement. "Hello friend!! Thanks again for doing this for us. Out of everyone on the team we're glad that it's you" he said now happily swaying back and forth in front of the engineer.

"Sun... I know Zeke is our friend, I like him best too, but his life isn't over if his plans don't go over well. I promise there is nothing more I want in the world than to be able to hold you in my arms and not just hug myself as you whisper sweet nothings in my mind, but... This isn't what I'm programmed to do! I play a little hide and seek to wear out the kids the last bit before naptime, but... I've never done crafts or any other games!" Continued the slowly panicking AI trying and failing to keep calm. It... Wasn't going well. Considering the fact Moon was known to be the calm, level-headed one between the duo, this spoke volumes on how deeply concerned he was.

"Hello! No need to thank me! I always thought you two deserved better than what they'd given you. Come on, let's get you guys to Parts and Service so you can see! I think you guys will really like the upgrades!" Sure enough, he held the door open for the animatronic and then entered the service tunnels after him, leading the way. They passed all the old and peeling murals of sunny skies, fluffy clouds, and rainbows, eventually entering the more drab tunnels till they finally arrived. Endos stood frozen and powered down, parts locked up in secure cages, and in the center of the room, was the protective cylinder.

With was the usual chair they would use for maintenance, but next to it was a metal examination table that wasn't usually present. The chair was actually already occupied. Strapped in place was a very thinly built endoskeleton with a wide-circular face, rays encircling its edge. Even just looking at the endo's faceplate, the mechanisms were complex, suggesting it was capable of forming expression, a set of teeth set into what appeared to be a moving jaw and if you looked close, there seemed to be more coiled up behind even those. There were even optics covered up by two-toned yellow eyelids.

Outside, hanging from a hook, as some endos were, was a second nearly identical endo waiting its turn. With only two visual differences. One was the lay of facial rays, and the other the color of the eyelids and teeth present.

"Alright, Sun. You're up first. I know it might be a little scary for you, but you'll be without Moon for a little while, only as long as it takes me to get you installed in the new body and then to get him moved. I promise I'll work as quickly as I possibly can." He motioned towards the metal table within the cylinder.

Sun turned his focus to listen to Moon as he followed Zeke through the tunnels. The thought of something going wrong during the upgrade hadn't occurred to him until moon mentioned it. It was true though. There was no guarantee things would go 100% smoothly but that was just how things were. Mistakes happen. Sun was quick to shake the thought away and focus on the part that he could actually make moon feel better about. "Silly Moony, I'm sure we'll get some newer programming with the upgrades since we'll both be active all the time. If we dont then I can always just show you how things are done." His hands now moved from the bells on his wrist to fidget with his rays. "And besides, even if we do have a little trouble adjusting I think being able to finally touch and hold you and be in your presence is absolutely worth it" sun said fondly.

When they finally made it Sun curiously glanced around as he listened to Zeke explain what was going to happen. He froze for just a second when Zeke had mentioned he'd be without moon when he woke and hoped his hesitation went unnoticed by both his counterpart and the engineer. Don't get him wrong, he was very excited about this, practically talking about it nonstop when moon and him received the news but he just assumed they'd wake from the upgrade together. The thought of not having Moon with him even for just a little while truthful had him a little nervous and thinking about how he'd deal with this speration anxiety when they were separate beings. Doesn't matter. He had to stop thinking before it riled up Moon, the last thing he'd want to happen right before the upgrade, so he sat on the metal table and threw a thumbs-up towards Zeke. "Ready when you are!"

"I suppose... But should the Moon really be out during the day? Or the Sun out at night?" He muttered right back, though his argument wasn't as strong as before. Warmth flooded in through their connection then. "I never thought we would be able to hold each other."

Meanwhile, Zeke was busying himself with the thankfully cooperative Sun. A few light taps at his laptop and the protective cylinder lock them both inside. "Alright, could you lay back for me, please? I'll work as quickly as good work allows." Once he was laying for him, he reached out and turned one then the other button upon the other's chest to get his chest cavity to pop open. While many of the animatronics had their thinking bits in the head where you would expect them, Sun and Moon had stylized heads that were very flat, leaving no room for the large drives required for such robust AIs and the Daycare Attendant rocked two of them! Gently he ran his fingertips over first one drive then the one next to it. "Alright, naptime guys. I'll wake you as soon as I can."

Carefully he hooked cables up to their drives, executing the command that would shut them down. Once he was sure they were both out, he hooked into the hard drive with the bar code reading "535447555453756e3v1" and started to transfer the data there into a new hard drive labeled "535447555453756e3v2". The transfer was not a quick process as there were many memories to move from the old drive to the new, but it eventually finished and he could finally unhook the old drive and remove it entirely from the endo for safe keeping.

Leaving Moon dormant, he turned his attention to the new endo and started to boot it up. Sun's basic programming ran through its checks in record time thanks to the newer and faster tech and when it was done, Sun's conscious mind finally started to wake and assume control. "Hey... How you feeling?" That wasn't likely an easy question to answer. Nothing felt the same... Some of his code would feel familiar in its purpose, but it was written so cleanly! Very nice and neat and ran wonderfully smooth. On top of that, there was new code he'd never felt before! Clearer protocols for handling poorly behaved children and how to handle unruly adults, not to mention how to react to violent situations. His child-appropriate story library contained many new books within it and his songs playlist contained even more royalty-free children's songs! Both of these had new genres as well. Bedtime stories and lullabies. Indeed, Sun had an entirely new section of programming that essentially gave him access to the same programming Moon had, but with key differences. It all came down to the personality behind it. Sun now could now shift gears out of his ever-excited persona, but he still sported more energy than the soothing Moon. Just based on code alone, Sun would be able to feel the compulsion not to do Moon's job, but to play a supporting role to him. While he was capable of soothing and singing children to sleep, that was not his main role when the lights were out. No... He still wanted to play, but he would be able to feel a different end goal and approach. Tucker the more energetic kids out with quiet games so they could sleep.

There was also one absolutely terrible realization. There was a familiar feeling broadcasting system so Sun could freely communicate with Moon, like he always had! There was nothing on the other end. Nothing.

When Sun came to his senses he felt....weird. Not in a bad way, at least not at first. It hit him when Zeke asked how he felt. Moon wasn't there. Of course. He knew this would happen. Zeke told him it would but he still couldn't help but feel anxious. It felt like it settled deep inside him. He bounced his knees and began fiddling with anything his hands could reach, searching through all the new content from the upgrade to distract him. By this point he completely forgot that he had been asked a question, trying instead to rationalize snd stop himself from spiraling. The broadcasting system brought him at least some peace of mind but it didn't really help in his current situation. He just had to be patient. Yeah patient. He could do that right? It wasn't like moon was gone forever. Zeke promised to work as fast as he could. Sun trusted him. Everything would be fine.

The lack of response wasn't a great one, but there was still information that could be gathered from it. He watched closely at the fluid movements of his body and was pleased by the near silence. Everything was gliding smoothly, no squeaks, scrapes, or grinding. Even the mechanical sounds of the mechanisms moving were very quiet so they should be silent once his shell was on. He was even expressing anxiety using very human-like ticks such as knee bouncing so his code was probably running nicely. The only thing he had to worry about was the lack of a response to his question. Standing himself up, he picked up his lower torso plating and approached.

"Hey... I know it's scary, but the quicker we run you through your paces and get you suited up, the sooner I'll be able to do the same for Moon. And you'll be right there for him too, won't that be nice? You're okay and Moon is just taking a nap. He'll be just fine. Can you look at me, Sun? Can you blink? I think you'll like this one too... Can you smile for me?" He asked as he helped the robot sit up, slipping the back side of the plating into place and pressing till it cleanly clicked then went on to do the same for the front half only to repeat the process again with a second set a little higher up. This extra joint in the stomach area would give him extra flexibility!

All the while, the old body he'd inhabited lay still on the table though it had automatically transformed into Moon upon losing connection with Sun. For the first time, he would be able to see Moon face to face, though the shell was perfectly still and unresponsive, staring blankly at the ceiling.

Sun snapped out of his racing mind when Zeke spoke again. The questions and simple requests definitely helped to calm and ground him, finally looking up and smiling at Zeke. Wait. Did he just smile? Like really smile? Sun moved his hand to touch where what used to be a motionless faceplate only to find something entirely different. He opened and closed his mouth a couple times and made a few different faces completely amazed by how smooth and natural it felt. His giddiness returned as he tried out other parts of his body and received the same smooth results. Despite his earlier problem, Sun had to admit he was glad he went first. He didn't want to think about how Moon would have reacted when he woke up if the roles were switched. By this point Sun had completely calmed down and was back to his cheery self as Zeke finished placing the plating. He gave a few more experimental movements before turning to the engineer and smiled wide. "This is so so sooooo cool!! I cant wait for Moony to check this out. He's totally gonna love it!" The bot was overflowing with excitement and still very much missing Moon, though he wasn't sure how much longer he'd be able to sit still. He hoped this would go by quickly so he could finally talk to Moon and share his excitement with him.

There he goes... It was cute watching him discover his own facial mechanisms. Before, all he could do was move his optics around, but now he could blink and emote! He was sure he would love his new faceplate too, once it was on. Watching him play with his own face gave him the chance to make sure all those little parts were working the way they should and indeed they all looked great. Sure, anyone that wasn't used to seeing naked machines might think he looked frightening, but Zeke loved seeing how everything worked and was deeply proud that he'd been the one to put these guys together himself.

"I'm so glad you like it and I hope you're right! I've worked really hard on you guys and I want you to be happy. Please, if there's anything you don't like or would like added to you now or in the future, let me know personally. I'll do my best to get permission to do the modification for you guys." He continued to work as he spoke, clicking more and more platting into place in the order they needed to go in to interlock properly so little fingers wouldn't be pinched between them. While he was at it he tested his ability to feel and respond to pulling, gently coaxing his arm into a different position without giving a verbal request, snapping more platting on when he was in the right position. Perfect.

"Keep nice and still for me, your hands are really complicated now." With that warning he went to work on those, the fingers double jointed which would allow him to completely close his fingers into a fist as well as bend the other direction to prevent damage when performing acrobatics or if his hand should get caught anywhere.

"Your entire body is now covered in a layer of hypoallergenic silicone so you'll be soft to the touch for the kids so they won't hurt themselves on you easily. Your nervous system is also much more sensitive so you'll feel when you're being touched and such. You need to let me know if anything needs to be adjusted to be more or less sensitive. You also have a tongue capable of not only feeling, but also tasting. There is a small tank so you can pretend to eat, but please keep that to a minimum as it would be a mess to clean up. It is watertight so you can drink as well, but none of it will do anything for you. Your hands, bottoms of your feet, and face will have thicker silicone so they're extra sensitive and soft. The kids can actually pinch your cheeks and you can pucker your lips and kiss. I thought Moon would really like being able to kiss the kids goodnight..." He muttered sheepishly as he finished with one hand then the other.

Just as he'd said, the hand was not only more complex and flexible in design, but also had thicker almost paw-like pads along the fingers and palms. If that weren't enough, the darker half of Sun's coloration seemed to have sparkly gold glitter in it! "Lift your hips, please?" Next he clicked his pelvis into place then his legs followed as well as a test where he pressed the pads in his feet and hands to see if he could feel it clearly. Part by part, everything was put on till he was finally lifting the other's faceplate. "Neutral expression, Sun." He ordered gently before installing the last part.

"There... Give your face another try and see if it feels good. Let me know if anything pinches." He reached over to his tools and picked up something he hadn't used so far and offered it to Sun. A mirror. For the first time Sun was getting to look at himself as a fully animated figure and he honestly looked like one of his posters had come to life, blue eyes and all. "What do you think? Do you like it?"
